Earthquake Questions

M-team-a-lonians,
You like that name, don't you?? :) Well, as I said I would, I'm going to list the questions we asked at the beginning of our story on earthquakes. Would you look up information on at least one of the questions and post the answer you find? If you see someone already answered the question adequately, please don't post a duplicate, ok? Let's try to get all of them answered by this weekend!

Question #1: Why do plates move?
Question #2: Is a doorway the safest place to be?
Question #3: What has been the strongest earthquake ever recorded?
Question #4: Are there earthquakes on other planets?
Question #5: How often do earthquakes occur?

Good luck!
-Mrs. Martin

Love the name!! Well i have an answer for #2, I here from scientests think that the doorway may colapse like any other part of the house. But this is just an answer that somebody said on yahoo when i looked it up on google so... i dont know if it is true...

The name is funny! I've got the answer for#1. Plates move because of the intense heat in the Earth's core that causes molten rock in the mantle layer to move. I looked this up on Google, so I don't know if it's true either. :D

Hi Mrs. MartinI have an answer for #1 Ocean waves putting pressure on one plate to go underneath or above causing both plates to collide with each other.

I've also got the answer for #3. The strongest earthquake ever recorded was the Great Chilean Earthquake. It happened on May 22, 1960. The earthquake struck off the coast, causing tsunamis over 10 meters high , that traveled as far as Hawaii, Japan, and New Zealand, killing 4,000-5,000 and leaving over 2,000,000 people homeless. It was a 9.5 magnitude! Wow! :o

Hi I think I got the answer to #2.Someone said to me before that it is only safe if the house is a old one.The doorways in old houses use a lot of wood so it is pretty safe. New houses on the other hand, use less wood to save money. >:o I dont know if it's right or not.By the way, I like that name, it's funny.

Great name! Anyways, I have the answer to #5. Larger earthquakes occur about once a year. Smaller earthquakes, such as magnitude 2 earthquakes occur several hundred times a day. I don't know if it's correct because I got it from yahoo and google and they both said the same thing.

I have the answer to #5. It depends how big the earthquake is. If it is a really small one, it can occur everyday, you can't feel it, but the house can. If it is a very big one, it occurs every few years.

Hi!!!
#1)
The outer layer of crust is made up of two layers: above is the lithosphere and below is the asthenosphere. Although the asthenospere is solid, it can flow like a liquid on geological time scales. The lithosphere is broken up into what are called tectonic plates. There are seven major plates which make up the seven continents and many minor plates that are islands. Earthquakes happen when a lithoshere plate flows and moves on the asthenoshere.
#2)
The doorway is not the best place to be during an earthquake, nor is under the table. After examining the debris left from the earthquake in China this summer, researchers say that it is safer to curl up in a ball next to a strong object instead of under it. I believe this becaue I have seen pictures of cars crushed by falling wood and objects though there was plenty of room next to the car that might of been enoug space to shelter several people. A doorway is not a good place to be during an earthquake because it collapseseasily in a strong earthquake.
#3)
The strongest earthquake ever recorded was the 2008 Sichuan Earthquake in China which happened on May 12,2008.
#4)
There are no earthquakes on other planets.
#5)
Earthquakes happen all the time. Tiny earthquakes happen around every two seconds. Every year, a 3.7-4.6 earthquake happens. A 4.7-5.5 earthquake happens every 10 years. An earthquake of 5.6 and up happens every 100 years.

2.No, it may be safer under a sturdy desk or large piece of furniture.
4.No, there ARE no earthquakes on other planets.
5.Strong earthquakes occur around once per month. Small earthquakes, however, occur more than several HUNDRED times a day!

I have a answer for #2. I think that it is the most stablest place but not the safest because it could colapse easily.I have an answer for #5 earthqaukes happen every day but we dont feel most of them.Earthquakes we feel happen every few years.

#2 answer I got is the best place is wherever you can get temporary cover from fallling objects, and then get out of the structure into an open area where there's nothing overhead.
